Lamps holds a degree in Music Composition. He is a student of legendary bassist Richard Davis (Miles Davis, John Lennon, Van Morrison) and composer Stephen Dembski.

From 2003-2006, Lamps was a member of the nationally-touring acoustic group The Profits, winners of 4 MAMA Awards including "Best Overall Artist" (2005) and independent sellers of more than 10,000 albums.

In 2009, Lamps composed a collection of classical piano pieces, Evensong, that won two MAMA Awards in 2010 including "Best Classical Album." His 2010 theatrical symphony, Evolution/Creation, was produced by Chicago's Quest Theatre Ensemble and nominated for 5 Jeff Awards including "Best New Work" and "Best Musical Production." It won for "Best Artistic Specialty."

He has arranged and produced hundreds of recordings that span the genres of pop, rock, folk, electronica, r&b, hip-hop, jazz, brass band, a cappella and classical. He has won awards in four different musical genres (pop, r&b, jazz, classical) and been nominated in two others (folk, theatrical).
